Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) in Seoul, South Korea has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation by the Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) Program for its Medical Travel Services Program.

The Global Health Accreditation® (GHA) Program, the first independent accrediting body focused on medical travel services and the medical travel patient experience, today announces an inaugural advisory board that will help guide the organization as it seeks to improve the patient experience and excellence of care received by patients who travel for their medical care and treatment, whether within their own country or internationally.

Karen Timmons is an internationally known expert in accreditation and healthcare quality and safety processes. She currently serves as CEO of Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA), a U.S.-based company that provides accreditation for organizations that offer medical travel, medical tourism and international patient services.

With high-profile destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, Southeast Asia has been a dominant region for medical travel for more than a decade.

The sight of a 69-year-old physician being physically assaulted and dragged off a United Airlines flight recently took social media by storm, with United’s terse response in the immediate aftermath roundly criticized.

Over the last several years, infections related to medical travel have received increasingly prominent news coverage. Most recently, a number of U.S. and Canadian patients became infected with an antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria after undergoing surgery at a hospital in Tijuana, Mexico.
